Anaesthetists are the single largest group of hospital doctors in the UK. Careers in anaesthesia can include:
- Providing anaesthesia and preparing surgical patients, as part of the surgical team
- Providing relief of post-operative pain in obstetric units
- Being part of cardiac arrest team
- Being part of the intensive care unit
- Being part of the accident and emergency department
- Chronic pain management
- Being part of the acute pain team
- Working in dentistry
- Working in psychiatry with patients receiving ECT
- Provision of sedation and anaesthesia for patient undergoing radiology and radio-therapy procedures
- Training medical students, nurses, doctors and paramedics
- Lead or manage departments who play major roles in surgery, resuscitation and clinical care services
